מאז 2013, תוכנית הסטודנטים של KDE מפעילה את Season of KDE, תוכנית שדומה אך מעט שונה מ־Google Summer of Code. תוכנית Season of KDE מציעה הזדמנות לכולם (לא רק לסטודנטים) להשתתף במיזמי פיתוח וללא פיתוח שתורמים למעטפת של KDE.
בהובלת Google, Google Summer of Code היא תוכנית בינלאומית מקוונת שמתמקדת בקידום מתנדבים חדשים לפיתוח תוכנות בקוד פתוח. מיזם KDE השתתף ב־Google Summer of Code במהלך כל שנות קיומה של התוכנית.
בשנים האחרונות, משתתפי SoK ו־GSoC לא רק תרמו יכולות חדשות ליישומים, אלא גם פיתחו את מערכת השילוב הרציף (CI) של KDE, דוחות סטטיסטיים למפתחים, תשתית אתרים, הסבה של יישומי KDE לפלטפורמות אחרות, תיעוד טכני כתוב, ועשו עוד המון, המון, המון דברים.
